Re the suggestion that this support might be dropped
(perhaps optionally) -- we ought to bear in mind
Karl's inclusion of xdvik (and dvipsk)
as part of "standard" UnixTeX.
I originally had some doubts about this inclusion,
but have now seen the light!
Though I suspect Karl may be storing trouble for himself,
since a new version of dvips in particular
seems to be brought out each week.
